Defying Resolutions (Wickedly Inspired)

As all theater kids out there, I have probably watched Wicked twice or «thrice» and definetly overheard Defying Gravity, assuring it a number one spot in my 2025 Spotify Wrapped even though only two weeks of the year have gone by. You must be wondering… ¿What kind of movie review title is this? or ¿How is Wicked relevant to New Year´s Resolutions?

If you are here for a review I am sorry to dissapoint, but you are welcome to stay, I will be making all kinds of Wicked references in this post. If you are here because you somehow wish to find a better approach to New Year´s resolutions, well, I assure you, it will be good and «un-evilishley» Wicked journey.

Beware, instrospective moments are about to be unraveled.

1. Defying Gravity has taken us far, keep doing it in your own way

Elphaba learned how to fly and she made it far into the western sky. Humanity literally defyed gravity to make it to space, so why is it so hard to defy our limiting beliefs while creating resolutions? How many times have we crossed out a dream because the wicked witch of the impostor syndrome wanted to make our life a living hell?

Maybe hitting the final note of Defying Gravity just as Cynthia Erivo did might be quite impossible for some of us, but there must be something you have always wanted to achieve, something that lies in the deepest pieces of your heart and that floats through your mind all the time.

Defy logic a little bit or a tad much this year, choose at least one thing that makes you feel alive, something that you look forward to every day and commit to it. In my case, I have always dreamt of being a writer, and year after year this blog was a resolution I was afraid to follow since I thought I wasn´t good enough for this. And look at me now, resoluted to increase my entry number, eventhough there is a high chance no one will read them, yet it fills my heart.

2. Galinda made the great sacrifice of becoming just «Glinda», so why are you so afraid of change?

I am not suggesting you go ahead and change your name in 2025, but I do invite you to change the way you look at resolutions, they shouldn´t be impositions that trap you, they should be dreams in the making.

We tend to see them as restrictions to reach some kind of standard imposed on ourselves by society. Why not see them as new habits that will make your life happier or something that makes you a better person? Changing something within yourself can be the key to reach for your goals with a better mindset and a much happier sense of self.

Glinda always dreamt of doing magic and she was told she wasn´t good enough but she persisted and even found a great, yet improbable friendship in the process, something that would have never happened if she didn´t open herself to new people who are not as popular as her. Be a stubborn Glinda sometimes but never let the evil wizards of society manipulate you. Change because you want to, not because others expect you to.

Always remember, you don´t need to proove yourself , you have always been enough irregardless of achieving everything that is written in your New Year´s resolutions list.

3. One short day in the Emerald City, is it enough for everyone?

Time, oh time, it can be our best friend or enemy. When it comes to resolutions, we feel a pressure to get all done in a very tight schedule.

One short day in the Emerald City might or might not be enough. If you need a week, a month a year or perhaps two of them to get to a finish line, it is not a dissapointment at all. Also, if a day is enough to make you change your mind about a goal or the path you will follow to reach it, it is okay. There is no time limit and no constraints that bind you to a goal. Always think about your heart´s true desire, be flexible when you need to, remove what no longer aligns with your hapiness and be kinder to yourself and others too.

Leaps don´t have to be gigantic. Take small steps that get you closer to your goal every day, after all, you must learn how to walk before you can learn how to fly.

Resolutions shouldn´t be torture and are definetly not delusions of grandeur, they should feel like a dance through life. Not all dancing genres are easy, but with some lessons, discipline, great companionship and a nice soundtrack that motivates you, it can become easier step by step. This year I choose to see resolutions as dreams with no expiration date, I might have a desired time of arrival and a specific plan but some journeys are longer than others.

So in 2025, would you care to defy resolutions with me?
